Wildlife

The mission of the LNR Wildlife Program (WP) is to defend and protect treaty rights related to wildlife management, hunting, and gathering, as well as maximize and protect wildlife, hunting and gathering opportunities. Started in 2022, the WP carries out that mission with a focus on terrestrial wildlife, avian wildlife, and marine mammal natural resources for the preservation of species, ecosystem health, and cultural and subsistence practices. The WP manages the wildlife on the ~13,500 acres of reservation land (of which ~10,500 are tidelands) and co-manages wildlife within 13 western Washington Game Management Units (GMU)s with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), and the eight other Point Elliott Treaty Tribes (PETT): Upper Skagit, Swinomish, Stillaguamish, Tulalip, Muckleshoot, Suquamish, Nooksack, and Sauk-Suiattle.

Recent/Ongoing Projects

Lummi Wildlife Staff collaborated with Point Elliott Treaty Tribes and State Co-managers to complete aerial surveys in March of this year. This group of elk was spotted from the helicopter at the Skookum Hatchery during the 2023 elk survey.
As part of the North Sound Motus Collaborative project Lummi hosts two 'Motus' stations which pick up radio-tagged birds flying past. These types of stations work together to reveal more about migration patterns and habitat use for different birds.
